What a great man, we have lost. Joe always had a smile, & a witty sense of humor. What a priviledge and pleasure to have known him. No more suffering & now reunited with Mary-Anne. He will be greatly missed.

I am stunned that Grandpa is gone so soon, I had so many stories I wanted to hear one more time to commmit them to memory. I am so glad I was able to visit a few weeks ago and had him sing me a song that I got to hear every time this clumsy girl scraped her knees, "The old woman of 72" never failed to erase my tears. I wish I was more like my gramps he never seemed to have a bad day, always happy to be alive and smiling. I cherish all the memories we made on our water ski trips, grampe enduring my countless questions on the long car rides, some things never change I still have a million questions for him. I loved spending hours to figure out all the puzzles on the Lucky lager bottle caps, and Grandpas Elmer Fudd hat, I was so impressed when Gramps showed off his water skiing abilities. I may not be his little girl anymore but I will forever miss my Grandpa.

Dad you are a man with many titles, including dad, grandad, gramps and Uncle Joe. No matter the title, you were loved and will be missed by us all. You lived up to your name "SMILEY" every day of your life. Smiling and making us laugh right to the end. We will miss you. Please say hello to Jessy, MaryAnne, Mary and Uncle Al. Age does not make it easier for there are just more memories to hold. Uncle Joe had a full and happy life, very proud of his wife and family. Uncle Joe was always an important person in my life. I didn't get to see him enough. He lived in California and I live in Canada, but he is a special person in my life.
My earliest memory of him is when he visited when I was about four years old. He bought my sisters and myself some icecream. I can remember that happy memory so clearly.
Through the years, as I grew up, I have to say I loved his laugh, his sense of humour, and his kindness.
My mother's eyes would light up when her brother Joe's name was mentioned. Her eyes continued to light up, even as she lay on her deathbed, and was able to talk to him by telephone one last time.
He and my Aunt Anne let me visit them and live in their home many years ago, when I was trying to decide if I should live in California as well. My Aunt Anne and Uncle Joe were the most perfect, kind, and gracious hosts possible. They couldn't do enough, and I will remember these 2 weeks, with these 2 special people, for the remainder of my life.
My heart is broken today as another beloved person in my life is gone, and I send my love and prayers to my wonderful Aunt Anne, and the entire Smiley family.
Every heart he touched, and that must surely be every heart he met, is breaking today.
Goodbye Uncle Joe. Surely you are in Heaven now with my mom, and your sister Helen, and making Heavenly hearts smile, continuing to do what you always did best here on earth.
