Memories & Candles
Dear Mike and Family,
Your dad was THE best teacher I had at St. Joe's. I think of him often with fond memories of him in his bow tie, relating a funny story or making a clever quip before getting started with class.
He was a remarkable man who will be sorely missed. It was a privilege to have known him.
I just found out about his death when going on line to give to St. Joe's. We made the donation in your dad's name to the Edward G. Sutula Scholars Fund.

I have fond memoties of Mr Ed. He often spoke of round ball and brown bottles which were student distractions from our studies. To this day I still quote him in latin. When faced with an accounting decisions on presentation of infomatiom.
"De gustibus non desputatdum". Loosely translated when it comes to taste there is no argument. God rtrest you ed. I trust your reward is great. Has it really been 48 years.

Professor Sutula was unsurpassed as a teacher, mentor and a Professor who provided wise and supportive career guidance - demanding in the classroom, always setting a high standard, and had the ability to make you want to do your best.

Mr. Sutula taught me Tax Accounting in the early 80's. While Tax can be an intimidating topic, he always reminded us that it was never as bad as we thought because, after all, the answers were all contained within the Tax Code! I remember one time when I was late for his class and all I had to write with was a really stubby pencil. He took the pencil from my hand and gave me some good-natured ribbing about it.

I can only echo what others have said about Mr. Sutula. A great wit and a passionate teacher. He had an infectious enthusiasm for a subject matter that obvioulsly didn't lend itself to humor or passion easily. My best memories at St. Joe's include his cost and tax accounting classes. He could drive the most bland point home with an offbeat comment about some social issue of the day. Almost 40 years later, I can still remember him talking about

Mr. Sutula was the personification of a happy gentleman who was at peace with himself and his place in the world of education.
As his student it was the highlight of my class day watching him teach me and everyone in the room the importance of accounting as a business tool.
He made a usually boring subject come alive and he rejoiced with us when we arrived at the same conclusion when confronted with a difficult accounting problem
He was a regular guy,but

The best of my time as a student at Saint Joseph's were the five courses that were taught to me by Professor Sutula. He was the finest of many fine teachers during my time as a student, an elegant man who could joke with us at one moment and ease into teaching a complex concept the next. Thirty five years after graduation, I still quote Professor Sutula's simple, but pointed definitions of accounting and finance fundamentals. Favorite memory: At the

Mr. Sutula truly cared about ensuring his students were given the opportunities to succeed. With his guidance and support, I was able to begin my career with a Big 8 accounting firm. In recent years when I spoke to my kids about their college choices and to encourage them to always strive to do their best because only good things will come their way, I would tell them about Mr. Sutula. He went out of his way to help me

Ed Sutula, what a great man and professor...admired by every student he taught, he touched our lives using his personality and wit, while instilling the importance of the course work. His class was always a pleasure to attend, we never knew what to expect, but we always knew he had our best interests at heart both as students and as young adults getting ready to face the world. Thank you Ed, you taught me accounting but also, many life lessons, and helped me become a better person.

The penultimate professional educator, master of his subjects, lasting impressions and the face of the Accounting/Business department at St. Joe’s, Mr. Sutula made his subject real, practical and interesting. In my successful career, I always look back to Mr. Sutula as one of the key cornerstones. We’ll miss you but never forget you.
