Anthony "Dave" Cavalieri
90 of Iron Mountain, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. He was born on January 13, 1923 in Iron Mountain, son of the late David and Maria (Filipini) Cavalieri. At the age of 14 he and his family moved to Bessemer for 4 years, where he attended school, graduating from Bessemer High School in 1941, and then moving back to Iron Mountain. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Cadet during WWII. He became a Ball Turret Gunner and Nose Gunner on a B-24 Liberator where he received a Certificate of Valor for his services with the 491st Bombardment Group. When the War ended he moved to Lansing and enrolled at Michigan State University, where he graduated with a degree in Forestry in 1951. While he was at State he met and married Irene Olsen of Kingsford at St. Mary Queen of Peace in 1951. After graduation the couple moved to Kingsford where they would raise their children.

Dave worked at the Niagara Mill for 35 years where he became Wood Yard Supervisor. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and bowling. Upon retiring they moved to Merriman where he kept busy with gardening and yard work. He especially enjoyed playing Bocce Ball at the Ray Mariucci Bocce Complex at Iron Mountain City Park.

He leaves his loving wife, Irene Cavalieri of Iron Mountain; his children Stephen (Debbie) Cavalieri of Iron Mountain, Jean (Lenny) Burns of Iron Mountain, Robert (Gail) Cavalieri of Norway, and Richard Cavalieri of Iron Mountain; 12 grandchildren Aimee (Tony) Tatangelo, Vincent (Nikki), Christopher, Anthony (Elise), Cole and Lucas Cavalieri, Shannon (Mel), Ryan (Bobby Sue), and Dylan Burns, Alyssa (Lee) Erickson, Amanda (John Paul) Allison and Ian Cavalieri; 4 great grandchildren Aiden and Gavin Allison, Lily Erickson, and Dominic Tatangelo; 2 sisters Joyce Whitlock and Sue Kovacevich both of Lansing; several nieces and nephews in the Lansing area.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Banfield.

Private family services will be held.

In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in his memory.

I just want to give my condolences to the family. Dave was an inspiration to me at the Bocce courts. His inspiration will always be with me as one who originated the Bocceleague to what it is today.

I enjoyed our trips to IM to visit family. I especially enjoyed all the stories Uncle "Tony" told. He always seemed to have an never ending list and usually they were informative and always entertaining. It is just unfortunate we lived so far away and could not visit more often.
He will be missed and was one of the true charaters of the UP and I will always have good memories of him.

Dear Friends:
I am so terribly sorry for your loss. From our childhood, I have pleasant memories of visiting your home in Kingsford Heights, and your Dad coming home from work, camp, or hunting; I also remember him with your pet beagle. I always think of him as a very quiet & serious man, one who loved the woods & outdoors. Please remember all of your good times together & find comfort in each other, family, and friends.
