James F. Sampley, "Papa Jim," passed away peacefully on June 6, 2017, after eighty-nine years of a life full of love and laughter. Jim was born on December 13, 1927 in East Chicago, Indiana. He spent his childhood in Montrose, Colorado with his siblings, Louise, Bob, Pattie, and Dick. He met the love of his life, Frankie, in his teens. The two wed on August 24, 1945. During World War II, Jim enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces. Upon his return, he met his infant son, Ronald Roy. Michael James was also born shortly after. The family of four then moved to the iconic little house in Phoenix, Arizona. Jim worked as a successful life insurance salesman. They welcomed their third son, James Fred II. Shortly after came Timothy Scot. The family was completed with the birth of Susan Beth Michelle. Jim was a devoted member of the Church of Christ. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, pheasant hunting, shooting guns with his brother-in-law, Bud Acton, and flying with his dad and brothers in their airplanes. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America. Most of all, he delighted in getting together with friends and gathering with his growing family. Jim and Frankie celebrated the marriages of Ronnie and Charlene, Jimmie and Valerie, and Susan and Michael O'Connor. They have fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and several beloved nieces and nephews. Jim found the good in everyone and always had a smile and a story to share. He never hesitated to help anyone in need. We will all miss his gentle nature and infectious laughter. We have never known a man more loved. Services will be held at Greenwood Memory Lawn, 719 North 27th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, June 10th at 9:00 am. All are welcome.
