COLUMBIA Allen Sims Marshall, 75, departed this life on November 5, 2012 after a brief illness.
Born October 4, 1937 in Lancaster, South Carolina, he was the son of the late William Burrell Marshall and Pearl Hutson Marshall. Allen attended Heath Springs High School and Clemson University. He was a founding member of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, where he recently designed a Ministry Building addition to his original church design. He attended Salem Methodist Church, Washburn, N.C. when at his mountain home. Allen was also a member of the Columbia Oyster Club and the Palmetto Club.
Allen was the president of Architrave, Inc., an architectural firm, and designed more than fifty churches throughout South Carolina and more than a thousand residential and commercial projects. He passionately believed that quality design was important and he applied that passion throughout his life. He was a professional artist who painted hundreds of paintings and mastered multiple media and was a garden designer who "painted with flowers." Allen touched the lives of many people and enjoyed doing so.
Allen donated his time to projects that he felt were important for his state and community, including serving many years on the Lexington County Zoning Board of Adjustments. Among his most significant creations were the design for the South Carolina Vietnam Monument and the World War I Monument which anchor Memorial Park in Columbia.
He served on the park's advisory board and donated his services to help assure that each of the monuments in the park upheld the park's design standards.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sally, with whom he recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; daughter, Fran Marshall of Columbia; son, Bill Marshall (Renee LaHue) of Charleston and their children, Bill Law and Sarah. In addition to his parents, Allen was predeceased by his two brothers, W.C. Marshall of Lancaster, S.C. and Albert Hutson Marshall of Wilson, N.C.
Over the past two years Allen had been working to develop the South Carolina War Dog Memorial planned for Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage contributions to the War Dog Memorial Fund, c/o Smith Barney, P.O. Box 7277, Columbia, SC 29202 or the Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 6952 Saint Andrews Road, Columbia, S.C. 29212.
The family will receive visitors at their home at 108 Rustic Court, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2012. The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church with Dr. Dale Welden officiating. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. There will be a brief graveside service on Friday, November 8, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Silver Brook Cemetery in Anderson, S.C.
