Stained Glass Emblem

Danny "Dan" Smith Duncan, 61, of Memphis, died Sunday, December 2, 2012, at his home after a long battle with cancer. He grew up in Bardwell, Kentucky and studied accounting at Murray State University, where he was president of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After college graduation, he came to Memphis to work for Deloitte and Touche, LLP and its predecessor firms as a Certified Public Accountant and audit partner, retiring 36 years later in 2009. During his career, he was a frequent instructor for Deloitte's regional and national continuing professional education programs on technical audit subjects. He was a mentor to many young accountants at Deloitte and enjoyed maintaining contact with former colleagues in his retirement.

Dan was a communicant of Church of the Holy Communion, Episcopal, where he was a member of the Vestry and former junior warden, stewardship chairman, and member of the Endowment Committee. He was active in Men's Bible Study Groups and cherished the friendships he developed with other participants. One of the highlights of his life was walking El Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage trail in France and Spain, with a small group of men in 2003.

Dan served on the board and development committee of the Church Health Center and the board of the Mid-South Food Bank. A graduate of Leadership Memphis, he was an active volunteer in community organizations from the time he arrived in Memphis. He was a past president of the Economic Club of Memphis and a past treasurer, vice-chairman of allocations, and board member of United Way of the Mid-South.

Dan enjoyed nature and traveling, especially hiking and bicycling trips to scenic foreign and domestic destinations, as well as fitness and yoga. He was an avid sports fan, following University of Kentucky basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyndell Mason Duncan and Thurston Smith Duncan of Bardwell, KY. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ann Ellington Duncan, and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary and Kelly Duncan of Dothan, AL and Barry and Angie Duncan of Dexter, MO. He also leaves his wife's mother, Jean H. Ellington, and sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Dan Dove, all of Kingsport, TN, and his nieces and nephews, Renee Grimes, Kyle Duncan, Brittney Ascher, Alex Duncan, Alicia Hart and Andrea Duncan.

A Memorial Service and Holy Eucharist will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Church of the Holy Communion, 4645 Walnut Grove Rd., Memphis, TN 38117. The family will receive friends at a reception in the Church's Cheney Parish Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorials be made to Church of the Holy Communion for the Endowment Fund or to the Church Health Center, 1210 Peabody Ave., Memphis, TN 38104.
