Daryl Jay Wassenaar, the son of Donald and Alyda (Kraayenbrink) Wassenaar was born February 9, 1954 in Orange City, Iowa. The family moved from Orange City to Sheldon when Daryl was 5 years old. He attended Sheldon Christian School through the eighth grade. He then attended Sheldon High School and graduated in 1972. After graduation, Daryl worked for Neal Chase Lumber and Occo Feed.
He was united in marriage to Marcia Van Dyke on April 24, 1976 at the United Methodist Church in Archer, Iowa. They lived in Archer for two years and then moved to Denver, Colorado in 1978. Daryl worked at 4 Wheel Campers for 12 years. After the company moved out of Colorado he worked at "Stairs, Inc." for about a year. While in Denver, Daryl and Marcia were blessed with two sons. Chad in 1982, and Brent in 1987. They enjoyed many good times in the mountains camping, skiing, and riding motorcycle.
In 1991, the family moved back to Iowa. Daryl started employment at Ag Partners and continued working there until ill health forced him to retire in January 2012. The past years in Iowa have been spent raising the boys, enjoying boating at Okoboji, riding motorcycle, and spending time with family and friends.
He loved Harleys, having had his first one when he was 22. He enjoyed working on the bikes with his son Brent, and also giving his son Chad rides. He enjoyed old cars and trucks and loved talking with others about them. One of his hobbies was making things out of old license plates. Daryl looked forward to their annual Halloween party which provided many laughs for all. He also liked to keep a tally of how many eagles he saw each year while driving truck.
Daryl passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2012, after a courageous year long battle with pancreatic cancer.
He will be remembered as a dedicated, hard worker. A very kind and giving man who was a devoted husband and father. Daryl was someone who was helpful to anyone at any time.
