Erma Margaret Disney, 90, a fast-pitch softball champion, who as Erma Robb and Erma Robb Shaffer, played for Des Moines' women's softball in the 1930 and 40's died in Peoria, AZ on September 20, 2012. Recruited out of elementary school to play for a junior high league, by her senior year at North High School in 1940 Erma pitched her team to a World Series in Detroit. In 1941 Erma married Lyle Shaffer, Jr., NHS '39, and moved to Chicago. During Lyle's term as an Army officer in WWII, Erma came home to Des Moines to the dangerous work of manufacturing 9 mm shells for the war effort.

After the war Erma and her daughter, Sandra, joined Lyle in Germany where they lived and worked as part of the U.S. post-war effort to rebuild the German economy. Coming home to Des Moines, Erma Robb Shaffer pitched for Kessler Trucking, once again heading for the 1948 World Series in Portland, Oregon. Erma also played for Walker-Shay Realty before retiring her glove.

In 1952 Erma married Lloyd E. Disney, Drake U. 1950, and went to work for Meredith Publishing and then the Des Moines school system. In 1967 Lloyd accepted a job in the booming San Francisco insurance industry and the Disney's moved west, beginning a 27 year love affair with the Bay Area. In 1994 they retired to Glendale, Arizona. Erma leaves behind her loving husband of 61 years, Lloyd Disney of Glendale, AZ; daughter, Sandra Barber of Oceanside, CA; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

A private celebration of Erma's life is planned. The family requests that memorial donations be sent in Erma's name to the P.E.O. Foundation or American Girls Softball
