Maurice (Dale) Block, age 83, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be Monday, December 17, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan, Iowa. Rev. Russell Anderson officiating.
Burial in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 16, from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M. with the family present from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Chapel in Ocheyedan.
Maurice Dale Block was born on February 28, 1929 in Harris, Iowa. He was the son of Leland and Emma (Johnson) Block. He lived his youth in the Harris and Ocheyedan, Iowa area, where he attended school and graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1947.
He was united in marriage to Barbara Lea Stolte of Ocheyedan, Iowa on April 21, 1951 in Springfield, Tennessee. Dale served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. They lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky while Dale was in the service. Dale was also stationed in Korea. After returning home from Korea, Dale and Barb farmed west of Ocheyedan and then east of town on Highway 9. In 1966, they moved to the family farm. In 1990, they moved to town. Farming and raising cattle was Dale's passion.
He enjoyed making birdfeeders so others could enjoy watching birds. His daily chores were to feed the birds and squirrels. He collected caps and antique tools. He liked to go to the grandchildren's activities. Dale enjoyed visiting with people who stopped by, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and others in the neighborhood. Even with his declining health, Dale would still talk to, joke with, and tease anyone near him.
He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan. Dale was a 58 year member of the American Legion Post 326 of Ocheyedan. He was on the Osceola County Board of Supervisors.
Dale will be remembered as a happy person whose life was centered around his Christian faith and his family.
He passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 61 years: Barbara Block of Ocheyedan, IA; his children: Connie and Jerry Schuster of Ocheyedan, IA, Linda Tangeman of Britt, IA, Susan and Lane Dirks of Ocheyedan, IA, Pam and Curt Jacobsma of Ocheyedan, IA, Doug and Danette Block of Ocheyedan, IA; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother: Dennis Block of Ocheyedan, IA; 3 sisters: Doris Mitts of Marcus, IA, Bonnie and husband Orville Belken of Arnolds Park, IA, Alice Jean and husband Dan Bergman of Ogden, UT; one sister-in-law: Ardelle Block of Spirit Lake, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother: Robert Block; infant granddaughters: Robyn Renae Schuster and Leah Joyelle Jacobsma; brother-in-law: Jon Mitts; sister-in-law: Bonnie and her husband Roger Wilson.
